Recently I had a problem with one of my client’s web servers.  It was late on Friday night and my client had asked for some settings to be updated on their IIS Web Server.

Now, just so you know, I’m a web developer, not a systems administrator. The alarm bells should have gone off and I should have said no.  That was my first mistake.  My second mistake was thinking that because I maintain my own web server, that qualified me to maintain someone else’s.

After making the first update, the situation deteriorated almost immediately.  The server would not respond no matter how many times I re-started it.  I tried re-tracing my steps so I could back-track, but that was a dead-end as well.  Panic mode…Friday night, no chance of getting a hold of anyone.

But on a whim , I sent off an e-mail to a sometimes colleague at Commercial IT Solutions.

Thanks goodness I did.   They quickly corrected the problem and got that server back up and running before anyone knew it was down. So thanks to them for getting me out of a tight jam.  That’s the kind of responsive support needed for system and network issues.
